How to get wrinkles and creases out of a painting canvas?

It can be very exciting to look forward to starting on your brand new  painting by numbers kit. However, your enthusiasm to start can be hindered if you find your canvas is wrinkled.

The good news is that some wrinkling for canvases of all types is very normal. The bad news is that wrinkles on paint by number canvases are more common due to the packaging and shipping, which also makes it a little more challenging to deal with.

Method 1: Flat Ironing

Your paint by numbers canvas is a high-quality material. Just like clothing, canvases are made from cotton, linen or polyester and can be ironed.

  1. Lay your canvas face down onto a thick towel or a flat surfacand mist the back of the canvas lightly with water from a fine spray bottle. Make sure you iron face down to prevent any smudging of numbers and lines.
  2. Keep it on a mid-range heat setting. Be careful not to set the iron on a high heat though.Make sure you never keep the iron in one place for too long.
  3. Dampen the fabric rather than soak it. Gently iron over the surface, keeping the iron moving, and your canvas will be wrinkle-free within seconds. Too much water and steam can actually clean away the numbers and lines.
  4. Wrinkles will be gone within seconds.

Method 2: Stretch and Roll

If you are a bit nervous about ironing your canvas, then you can try stretching and rolling the wrinkles out.

  1. Place your canvas face down onto a clean flat surface.
  2. Mist the back of the canvas lightly with water from a fine spray bottle.
  3. Gently start to stretch the canvas out to remove the wrinkles by hand, or roll them out by using a clean rolling pin to roll the canvas flat, applying a gentle pressure as you go.
  4. As the canvas dries out, the wrinkles should disappear.
